The IRS has extended the April 15 tax filing deadline for individuals and businesses until July 15 in response to the COVID-19 emergency.
The move was made by the agency and treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin at the direction of the Trump administration. It comes two days after the IRS extended the tax payment deadline three months but kept the filing date at April 15. Groups like the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and multiple federal lawmakers had also expressed concern about not granting an extension for filing returns.
At the time of this writing, the deadline change does not affect those taxpayers who have filed extensions through Oct. 15 for individuals and Sept. 15 for partnerships and S corporations. Additionally, although the deadline is extended, Mnuchin took to Twitter to encourage taxpayers who are due refunds to file now to get their money.
Note that the IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers are temporarily closed for the safety and health of employees. Questions can still be answered online via tools and resources available on the agency’s website. And as always, James Moore’s tax CPAs are available for client assistance as this pandemic develops.
